SiCA for Street Light Monitoring
Remote streetlight monitoring, dimming and fault detection
Introduction SiCA for Street Light Monitoring is a fully wireless street light monitoring and control system. It allows facility managers to remotely switch and dim street lights from the control centre based on schedules and events.
This can dramatically reduce street light energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions. The system also tracks lamp failures and day burning lamps to reduce response times and improve customer satisfaction.
Save Energy by Dimming Energy savings of up to 40% can achieved by dimming lamps during off-peak hours and installing efficient electronic ballasts in street light luminaires. A wireless controller is attached to each ballast which sends data to a SiCA Gateway using secure and reliable Zigbee™ wireless technology.
This data is then sent to a central SiCA Server where it is made available for management and reporting applications. Node to SiCA Gateway ratios of up to 200 can be achieved depending on the terrain and reporting interval.
Scheduling & Remote Control Street light controllers can be grouped and schedules defined based on traffic volumes, location or once-off events. For example power can be increased during Winter shopping seasons, public holidays & weekends but reduced during the working week and other quiet periods.
Street lights can also be controlled manually by an operator from a central location in the event of a road traffic accident or similar emergency. This feature can also be used to exclude individual street lights from energy saving schedules to increase security in dimly lit areas.
Fault DetectionIn most countries regulations dictate that street lights must be periodically inspected to ensure maximum up-time for safety and security. SiCA for Street Light Monitoring instantly notifies an operator if a lamp fails to switch or dim, eliminating the need for expensive and time consuming maintenance checks.
The system also automatically records lamp burn hours and can store records of maintenance events. When this data is combined with corporate asset management systems, it can be a powerful tool for predictive maintenance and street light upgrade operations.
AMR Infrastructure Recent advances in wireless technology and an urgent need to reduce energy consumption has led to a dramatic increase in smart meter deployments. One of the most distinct advantages of EpiSensor's SiCA for Street Lights system is that the wireless infrastructure is perfectly placed to communicate with smart meters in homes or businesses.
The monitoring infrastructure bandwidth can be leased to utilities and other third parties to deliver metering data which can generate additional revenue and increase the return on investment.
Management Software EpiSensor's SiCA Studio software can manage thousands of wireless nodes from any location in the world via the web. Nodes which are assigned GPS co-ordinates can be shown on web based GIS (geographic information system) system.
SiCA Studio makes it easy to configure a city-wide street light monitoring system and can remotely upgrade firmware on street light controllers, instantly detect lamp failures, generate electricity consumption reports and export data to Excel for further analysis.
System Integration EpiSensor is currently working with market leading street light software companies to deliver a seamlessly integrated monitoring solution which will cater for any terrain or IT infrastructure. It will allow both power line and wireless communications systems to reliably co-exist with a familiar user interface and without having to purchase additional server software licenses.
This will also enable customers to use existing controller hardware and asset tracking systems, which reduces overall complexity and cost.
