New Smart Energy Solution Launched by Irish Company at International Conference February 16th, 2009 - Dublin, Ireland
Episensor, a leader in the development of Zigbee based wireless sensor networks, has launched a new energy solution which will help companies manage and control their energy costs more effectively and efficiently. The new product was demonstrated to European Utility companies at a conference this week hosted by the Zigbee Alliance in the Radisson St Helen Hotel in Dublin. The EpiSensor devices are built around a wireless sensor networking technology called ZigBee which has been described as an “Internet of things”. EpiSensor is recognised as one of the pioneers in ZigBee technology and has installed many working systems around the world. The ZEM-30 Energy Monitor is particularly useful in situations where there are concentrations of electrical equipment, such as in datacentres, processing plants and building plant rooms. It allows companies to understand the pattern of energy consumption within their organisations and hence plan an energy strategy. “This product is ideally suited to both short term and continuous energy audits and monitoring with minimum disruption to ongoing operations during installation and operation. It can be easily configured and extended without the time and expense of installing wired sensor connections,” said Brendan O’Malley (CEO, Episensor). The product demonstration involved a number of energy monitors connected to various devices in the Radisson hotel – a deep freeze, a vending machine and a water boiler - communicating over a ZigBee network to a Network Gateway in the hotel. The Gateway sent the data to a database at Episensor’s head office in Limerick, from where the information was accessed by several different software packages in the USA and Ireland. EpiSensor has created a unique “sensor-to-database” approach to the practical implementation of wireless sensor networking called the SiCA Platform. Across a range of applications and global markets, the SiCA Platform brings the benefits of wireless sensors to users in a secure, reliable, cost-effective and easy-to-deploy manner. The SiCA Platform enables synchronisation with any industry standard relational database. The sensor data is then available for use by customer software applications such as Building Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems or Intelligent Utility Network (IUN) Systems.
