EpiSensor technology to be used in Antarctic climate change research

Limerick, Ireland - 10th November, 2008

New sensor technology developed by Limerick Company, EpiSensor will be used by the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) in an Antarctic expedition. Led by world famous polar explorer Pat Falvey, a team of scientists and secondary school students will conduct a wide-ranging research programme into aspects of Antarctic climate and wildlife. The expedition will follow in the footsteps of polar explorers Shackleton, Crean and McCarthy to South Georgia, Elephant Island and Antarctica from 7th Nov to 2nd Dec, 2008.

Using EpiSensor’s devices, LIT environmental scientist Carol Meagher and her colleagues will take constant measurements of sea and air temperatures as well as water salinity. Among the equipment they are bringing with them are EpiSensor ZigBee temperature probes. These have been designed to operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees C and have been tested and certified accordingly. The team hope to measure changes in climate by comparing the readings to previous readings taken by research stations in the Antarctic.

The EpiSensor devices are built around a technology called ZigBee which has been described as an “Internet of things”. EpiSensor is recognised as one of the pioneers in ZigBee technology and was one of the first companies in the world to demonstrate working prototypes.

“We are delighted to be contributing to this expedition and the excellent work being conducted by Dr Josephine Treacy and her colleagues. It is a further enhancement of our close relationship with the Limerick Institute of Technology,” commented Brendan O’Malley, CEO, EpiSensor. “It is a tribute to our product development team that our devices have been chosen to perform under the harshest environmental conditions.“

Seven Irish schools will participate in the Voyage of Discovery to Antarctica.
